10 Hearts / June

Celebrating Kitestring’s 10th Anniversary

June / Heather Mitchell

Heather Williams, Creative Director, 6 Years.

Give a brief overview of the project/initiative you chose.

Hobbitstee Wildlife Refuge is a not-for-profit charitable organization based out of Jarvis, Ontario caring for several thousand orphaned, sick and displaced wildlife annually. Many of those animals are in distress as a direct result of human activity. They also work on protection and restoration, education and mitigation to help prevent wildlife from being in distress in the first place. What is also an amazing aspect to Hobbitstee is that they are an all volunteer staff and 100% of donations go towards their cause.

Why did you choose your project?

Hobbitsee Wildlife Refuge is a not-for-profit charitable organization based out of Jarvis, Ontario caring for several thousand orphaned, sick and displaced wildlife annually. Many of those animals are in distress as a direct result of human activity. They also work on protection and restoration, education and mitigation to help prevent wildlife from being in distress in the first place. What is also an amazing aspect to Hobbitsee is that they are an all volunteer staff and 100% of donations go towards their cause.

Why did you choose your project?

I have always been a lover of all animals and felt the need to help in any way possible when it came to this. I feel that we have the opportunity to give a voice to animals and talk more openly about things that are affecting not only wildlife, but all animal suffering. When I heard about Hobbitstee and found out a little more about what they were doing, I felt automatically drawn to their mission and wanted to help in anyway possible.

What would people be surprised to learn about your initiative?

The founder of Hobbitstee, Chantal, is also very passionate about helping people. She integrates a young offenders program into the centre allowing youth to volunteer.

What did you learn by having this be your part of the 10 Hearts Celebration?

After talking with Chantal and doing more research on their organization, I was amazed at the reach and sense of community they have within Southern Ontario. Many animals from Hamilton, Brantford, Waterloo and other surrounding areas are taken to Hobbitstee and cared for.

What have you learned most about your community in the 10 years Kitestring has been open?

It has been great to see how our community has come together to help in all of our initiatives thus far.

What have you learned about yourself while being part of Kitestring?

Kitestring is such a supportive workplace and the culture is definitely a family-oriented one. I greatly value that and it definitely showed while working on everyone’s 10 Hearts initiatives so far.

Final thoughts?

Hobbitstee is always in need of donations. Money can be sent directly to the organization right here. They have also sent out an urgent request as of late for donations of fresh fruit and vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes, apples, kale, and collards as they have a huge influx of groundhogs in their care at the moment. Also following them on Instagram (@hobbitsteewildliferefuge) and Facebook (Hobbitstee Wildlife Refuge) is a great way to stay informed and share the amazing work they are doing!
