The Rules of Mad Men

Mad Men is back and kitestring is tickled pink. Season 4 starts July 25th with Don Drapper taking the risk of opening a start up advertising agency based out of a hotel room.

Lets see how kitestring’s “office environment” measures up to the 1960′s advertising world of “rules” as prescribed by Mad Men creator, Matthew Weiner in the above preview of Season 4:

1. ” … When God closes a door, he opens a dress.”
Ok. So this is pretty sexist and taboo for 2010. However, the idea that limitations breed creativity still rings true. Breed. Get it? Not funny. Sorry.

2. “There’s a place to cry – Your apartment.”
Still true. Excuse me.

3. “Only boring people are bored.”

4. “Put your nose down and pay attention to your work.”

*Note: The preview mentions that the typical office environment needs to be shaken up and let loose a bit in order for the creative work to happen. That includes the occasional search for the cutest #BabyBeluga.

P.S. Here’s my pick. And since there was no official criteria or judge, I win:

Matthew Weiner is kind to spread attention around to Roger, Joan and Betty, but Don Draper is the most consistently articulate and pragmatic.

“What you call love was invented by guys like me, to sell nylons. You’re born alone and you die alone and this world just drops a bunch of rules on top of you to make you forget those facts. But I never forget. I’m living like there’s no tomorrow, because there isn’t one.”

“I hate to break it to you but there is no big lie. There is no system. The universe is indifferent.”

“There will be fat years and there will be lean years, but it is going to rain”

“The day you sign a client is the day you start losing them.”

“Young people don’t know anything. They don’t even know that they’re young.”

Can you tell he has Ayn rand on his bookshelf?
